Abstract

Liszt's adaptation of existing music is staggering in its quantity, scope, and variety of technique. He often viewed the model work as a source that he strove to improve, rival, and even surpass. Liszt's Representation of Instrumental Sounds on the Piano: Colors in Black and White provides a comprehensive survey of Liszt's reworking of instrumental music on the piano, particularly his emulation of tone colors and idiomatic gestures. The book relates Liszt's sonic reproductions to the widespread nineteenth-century interest in visual-art reproduction. Hyun Joo Kim illustrates Liszt's diverse approaches to the integrity of the music in a detailed, vivid, and insightful manner through close study of his arrangements of Beethoven's symphonies and Rossini's Guillaume Tell Overture, his two-piano arrangements of his own symphonic poems such as Mazeppa and Hunnenschlacht, and his Hungarian Rhapsodies. By examining orchestral music and Hungarian Gypsy-style music as sources of Liszt's sound representations, this book reveals Liszt's musical discourse as straddling the musical, cultural, and aesthetic divides between mainstream and peripheral, art and folk, serious and popular. - HYUN JOO KIM holds a PhD from Indiana University and is an independent scholar in Seoul, South Korea.

Abstract

This compact introduction to the ordinary differential equations and their applications is aimed at anyone who, in their studies, is confronted voluntarily or involuntarily with this versatile subject. Numerous examples from physics, technology, biomathematics, cosmology, economy and optimization allow a quick and motivating approach - abstract proofs and unnecessary formalism are avoided as far as possible. In the foreground is the modelling of ordinary differential equations of the 1st and 2nd order as well as their analytical and numerical solution methods, in which the theory is briefly dealt with before the application examples. In addition, codes show exemplarily how even more demanding questions can be answered and meaningfully represented with the help of a computer algebra system. In the first chapter the necessary previous knowledge from integral and differential calculus is treated. A large number of exercises including solutions round off the work. The Author Prof. (em.) Dr. Albert Fässler studied mathematics at ETH Zurich after studying mechanical engineering and received his doctorate in 1976 with a thesis on applied group theory. In addition to his teaching activities at the ETHZ and his many years of teaching at the Bern University of Applied Sciences, he has also always been internationally active - research stays have taken him to the USA and China, among other places. Since his retirement, he has repeatedly taught in China, India and Switzerland.

Abstract

This book develops a full theory for hinged beams and degenerate plates with multiple intermediate piers with the final purpose of understanding the stability of suspension bridges. New models are proposed and new tools are provided for the stability analysis. The book opens by deriving the PDE’s based on the physical models and by introducing the basic framework for the linear stationary problem. The linear analysis, in particular the behavior of the eigenvalues as the position of the piers varies, enables the authors to tackle the stability issue for some nonlinear evolution beam equations, with the aim of determining the “best position” of the piers within the beam in order to maximize its stability. The study continues with the analysis of a class of degenerate plate models. The torsional instability of the structure is investigated, and again, the optimal position of the piers in terms of stability is discussed. The stability analysis is carried out by means of both analytical tools and numerical experiments. Several open problems and possible future developments are presented. The qualitative analysis provided in the book should be seen as the starting point for a precise quantitative study of more complete models, taking into account the action of aerodynamic forces. This book is intended for a two-fold audience. It is addressed both to mathematicians working in the field of Differential Equations, Nonlinear Analysis and Mathematical Physics, due to the rich number of challenging mathematical questions which are discussed and left as open problems, and to Engineers interested in mechanical structures, since it provides the theoretical basis to deal with models for the dynamics of suspension bridges with intermediate piers.
